Introduction of Nature Settings

“Doth the Mother birth the Innocent

Belonging to unknowing transcendence

Intertwined in the lives of Green and Blue

Star or Sea or Sky meant so true

Ascending to some sense of Awe

Firstly “Nature” to be cared for”

Nature Settings in "The Tale of Peter Rabbit"

Once literary works are in a discussion or analysis, their elements: settings, devices, and themes, are as well settled to be explored. The main topic or issue, paved in children’s literature is predominantly about nature like in the story’s settings, plots or even characters themselves. It is paramount to firstly understand the nature settings.

Intriguingly, from the researcher’s discovery and analysis in “The tale of Peter Rabbit”, this ecological textual and imagery introduction can convey the theme of “exploration of beauty in nature” with the assistance of the literary techniques. This theme portrays the existence of nature and its units in the story, encompassing animals, fruit, vegetables, and trees. From this exposition of nature in “The tale of Peter Rabbit”, on the very first page and entire pages after that appear the allusions and tribute to the world of nature:

ONCE upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were—Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter. They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree (Potter, 2006, p. 6).

According to this excerpt, the literature starts by introducing the animal characters: Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, the protagonist, Peter, and Mother respectively. The story further mentions their natural dwelling, the root of a very big fir-tree. This introductory part of the story can help stimulate the readers to reflect the theme of “exploration of beauty in nature” that the story explores overall nature units like animals and tree. This theme can be supported by the techniques of representational entities. For example, the roles of all animal characters like Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, the protagonist, Peter, and Mother are able to connote the entities where they represent nature in this story through the descriptive explanation where they live in the sand-bank inside the fir-tree.
